CHICAGO — As Chicago moves into “Phase 3” of the mayor’s coronavirus reopening plan, some businesses are opening their doors while others remain closed following days of unrest, looting and violence.

There are also more protests expected in Chicago Wednesday following the police killing of George Floyd. WGN will be offering updates here throughout the day June 3, 2020.

6 p.m. – Large turnout in Deerfield for protest.

4:15 p.m.: Metra to stay on Sunday schedule through June 7

Metra trains will continue operating on a Sunday schedule through this Sunday, June 7, but there will be no service on the last trains of the day. Additionally, there will be no service on the SouthWest or North Central service lines, or the Heritage Corridor, the transit agency said in a tweet.

2 p.m. — Mag Mile businesses remain boarded up

Businesses on Michigan Avenue are still boarded up, despite the fact that Chicago moved into Phase 3 of the coronavirus reopening plan today.

Leaders of the Magnificent Mile Association say a majority of their 400 members say they will not be opening their doors today. That includes businesses along Oak Street, most of the hotels, restaurants and retailers that are still boarded up due to looting over the weekend. The losses are reported to be well into the millions.

The Mag Mile Associations says businesses are now targeting June 5 and June 8 for reopening.

1:25 p.m.: City monitoring racial tensions, relatively quiet Tuesday night

On a conference call with reporters, Mayor Lightfoot said the city is monitoring escalating racial tensions in some neighborhoods, and community leaders are working at de-escalating things.

Police Superintendent David Brown says last night was much quieter insofar as protests and other unrest was concerned. In total 274 people were arrested, including only six arrested for looting. Police also recovered 69 guns, he said.

Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Allison Arwady says the city is still getting hundreds of new cases of COVID-19 every day.

1 p.m.Volunteers clean up the West Side

Volunteers are joining forces to help clean up the 37th Ward on Chicago’s West side, where the alderman says a call for help led to an “overwhelming” response. WGN’s Julian Crews reports:

Despite the beginning of “Phase 3” of Chicago’s coronavirus reopening plan Wednesday, many businesses along the Magnificent Mile will remain closed due to looting damage and unrest.

11:30 a.m. – Cicero reports only 2 reports of shots fired since curfew implemented

The Cicero Police Department said the town had only 2 reports of shots fired and no significant incidents or serious damage of businesses to report, as a result of the curfew.

The town of Cicero declared a state of emergency and implemented a curfew on Tuesday.

11 a.m. – Peaceful protest in Little Village

Community residents in Chicago’s in Little Village neighborhood are marching near 26th and Albany “to defend black lives,” organizers said.
