CHICAGO — Chicago police say seven people were shot, one fatally, Tuesday night in Washington Park following an altercation between two groups.

Around 7:45 p.m., Chicago police responded to the South Side-area park for a report of shots fired. Police said two groups got into an altercation and gunfire erupted.

CPD spokesperson Tom Ahern said ambulances transported several people to the University of Chicago Hospital. Outside of the one causality, the remaining six victims’ conditions are unknown.

No innocent bystander is believed to have been struck, police added. Despite reports that a ball game was occurring at the time of the shooting, police stated that they could not confirm those details, citing an ongoing investigation.

Officers remain at the scene, canvassing the area for evidence.
