ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. — A 15-year-old girl was eating dinner inside a Round Lake Beach home Wednesday night when a bullet entered the residence and struck her. She died at the hospital.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive on the report of an injured person at around 9:10 p.m.

The girl, identified as Valeria Rodriguez, did not appear to be the intended target, according to police.

Police believe a person nearby the home fired a gun outside and the bullet came into the home.

Bullet holes at residence can be seen at a window.

Rodriguez was transported from the home and died at the hospital. The coroner said she suffered a gunshot wound to the torso.

The Rodriguez family told WGN News they are devastated and that their daughter was sitting down for dinner when she was shot.

Neighbors said they are absolutely heartbreaking to hear about what happened.

“I can’t imagine, it could have happened to any of us,” Jacqueline Santana said. “A couple of months ago, they were having a quinceañera for her.”

The father of the girl wants justice and is calling on the community to speak up for potential tips.

No one is in custody. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Round Lake Beach police at 847-546-2127.
