CHICAGO — Illinois will once again take a staring role in Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker will address the crowd at the United Center Tuesday evening followed by former President Barack Obama and former First lady and Chicago native Michelle Obama. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff is also among the scheduled speakers.

Tuesday started with a small disruption inside McCormick Place. Minnesota Gov. and presumptive vice president nominee Tim Walz was speaking at the Women’s Caucus when he was interrupted by protestors. A small number of protestors had to be escorted out of the room by security.

Day 1 one of the DNC featured President Joe Biden and a surprise appearance from Vice President Kamala Harris.

Also Monday demonstrators gathered near the United Center for a large protest against the war in Gaza. The demonstrators in Union Park comprise the Coalition to March on the DNC, made up of a number of different groups that are centered around a protest of the Israeli-Palestinian war. At around 4:45 p.m. after marching to an area near Park #578, along Washington Boulevard, a group of protestors broke through the barricades that make up a portion of the security barrier surrounding the United Center.

On Tuesday Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and the police department announced additional fencing would be added. More demonstrations are planned for Tuesday.
