CHICAGO — A multi-vehicle crash along the Edens Expressway caused closures and backups during rush hour on Friday afternoon.

According to Illinois State Police, the three-car crash unfolded around 3:10 p.m. and also caused a diesel spill from a semi-trailer, leading to road closures in both directions.

Troopers said they believe the semi-trailer caused a rear-end chain reaction crash, which caused diesel to spill from the semi.

A HAZMAT team was then called to the scene to conduct a cleanup.

WGN SkyCam 9 was over the scene at around 4 p.m. when several emergency vehicles could be spotted on the scene and one of the vehicles, a heavily damaged silver SUV, appeared to have crashed into the impact attenuator.

The crash led to closures in both directions. Troopers said all southbound lanes are being diverted at Old Orchard Road while all northbound lanes are being diverted off at Dempster Avenue.

Currently, it is unclear how long the closures could last and drivers should plan for delays.

According to troopers, two of the drivers involved were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
