CHICAGO – Three people are dead and five people were injured after a shooting Monday afternoon in Chicago Lawn near Gage Park, according to Chicago police.
Officials said just after 2 p.m., authorities were sent to the 3500 block of West 59th Street for reports of multiple people shot. When authorities arrived, they initially found two men dead.
Just after 5 p.m., police said a third man died from his injuries, while reporting another man and four women were injured.
A total of eight people (four men and four women) were shot and all victims were between the ages of 20 and 35; they appeared to be attending a social gathering at a home on West 59th Street, according to investigators.
A motive for the shooting is unclear at this time.
Police told WGN News that officers had been to the home before. Nearby residents said the location is known for parties and gatherings.
One neighbor who grew up in the area told WGN News he heard at least 10 gunshots and then saw people screaming and running from the house. He also said violence in the area is prominent.
“Rest in peace to the victims and my condolences go out to the family and hopefully the City of Chicago can combat the crime, because it’s been bad like this ever since I was a kid. Things haven’t changed out here,” neighbor El Towers said. “I’ve been here my whole life and I always remember shootings and people getting killed. It’s the same thing 30 years ago.”
Police declined to say if they were looking for any particular suspects, saying only that it’s still very early in their investigation and that they’re still trying to figure out what happened inside the home.
It’s unclear if all of the victims lived at the home or were at the home for the gathering.
No other information was released and Area One Detectives are investigating.
