SAN FRANCISCO (WGN) — New head coach. Same old Chicago Bears.

Thomas Brown made his head coaching debut in replacement of Matt Eberflus, but as they’ve done so many times this season, the Bears got off to a slow start on offense and the San Francisco 49ers wasted no time putting points on the board. Going into halftime, the 49ers had three-and-a-half times as many first downs (14) as Chicago had total yards (4).

Caleb Williams went 17-for-23 with 134 yards and 2 TD passes for the Bears, while Brock Purdy completed 20-of-25 passes for 325 yards and 2 TD passes for San Francisco.

Here’s how the game broke down.

Game Recap

It was all 49ers early, often and all game long.

San Francisco scored the first 24 points of the game and held Chicago scoreless in the first half.

Brock Purdy found JaJuan Jennings for a pair of TD passes sandwiched around a 1-yard TD run by rookie running back Isaac Guerendo to take a 21-0 lead.

Jake Moody added a chip shot 23-yard field goal with less than two minutes to go in the second quarter. That made the score 24-0.

For the seventh time this season, the Bears went three-and-out on their opening drive of the game and did next to nothing for the rest of the first half.

By the time the second quarter ended, the 49ers had outgained Chicago 324-4 and racked up 14 first downs to the Bears’ one.

According to The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain, Chicago’s 4 total yards was their fewest yards in a half going back to the year 2000.

If there’s any consolation for what was mostly a poor showing by the Bears, Williams and Rome Odunze found a rhythm in the second half.

Williams hit Odunze with a pair of TD passes to get Chicago on the board. One was a four-yard connection with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter, and the other was a 14-yard TD pass with just under 12 minutes left in the ballgame.

Odunze finished his day with four catches for 42 yards and 2 TD catches.

While the Williams-Odunze connection provided a brief spark, Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr quickly extinguished it. Each 49ers running back added a TD run apiece in the second half, which brought the game to its final score, 38-13.

Guerendo notched 15 carries for 78 yards and 2 TD runs by game’s end.

After starting the year 4-2, the Bears have lost seven in a row and now sit at 4-9 on the year.
