The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a Winter Weather Advisory ahead of a winter weather system that will bring the risk for a wintry mix of precipitation including ice accumulations.

We expect a quick hit of snow showers Wednesday morning before a bigger impact with rain, freezing rain and sleet in the afternoon and evening hours.

For Northwest Indiana, the southwest and south suburbs, the advisory begins at noon Wednesday through 6 a.m. on Thursday. For the city, western and northern suburbs, the advisory begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday.

Models show the greatest impact for ice along the Interstate 80/90 corridor across Indiana and into Ohio.

Untreated surfaces will become icy and slippery. Caution is advised. Ice accumulation of around 0.10 inch is possible, with locally heavier amounts along and south of I-80.

Conditions should clear by Thursday morning.
