GARY, Ind. — A man was shot and killed in a police-involved shooting in Gary.

The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 600 block of Adams Street. Gary police were reportedly delivering a warrant when shots were fired.

Around 7 a.m., detectives with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene to investigate the shooting. A preliminary investigation indicates the Gary SWAT team was conducting an operation and a man was fatally shot.

Investigators spent close to four hours gathering evidence from a townhome. It is unclear what exactly authorities were looking for.

A witness said she heard about eight gunshots as she was leaving the house on her way to work. Another witness said his children heard the shots, then saw a body on the ground.

“We heard a lot of explosions around 6:30 this morning. Told the kids to get down. Right after the explosions, we heard gunfire. My initial thought was to go downstairs to see what was going on. Walked out my back door, there was a man down. After I saw that, told the kids to get back in the house. We’ve been inside the house since then,” said a witness.

The Lake County Detective Bureau and Lake County CSI are handling the investigation.
