CHICAGO — Chicagoland is gearing up for a round of potentially severe weather on Wednesday night.
Tuesday’s hot and humid weather will stick around throughout the day on Wednesday, but severe weather threats ramp up heading into the afternoon hours.
While the day began with just a few peaks of sunshine, even more clouds are expected to move in heading into the afternoon.
Much of the metro area is under a level 2 of 5, or slight risk, of seeing a strong or severe thunderstorm.
While the risk is on the lower end, the storms still have the potential to produce damaging winds, lightning and locally drenching downpours.

Timeline:
While the potential for isolated showers or storms continues throughout the day, severe weather threats arrive later in the afternoon.
The WGN weather experts say the threat of severe weather ramps up around 6 p.m. as a system moving east approaches Chiacgoland.
Residents in the path of the storms could see strong rains and damaging winds, though conditions are expected to improve by around 10:30 p.m. as the system exits the area.
