ADDISON, Ill. — A suspect is in custody after he reportedly fired shots at police officers from inside an Addison home.
Police said just before 11 a.m. Thursday, officers were sent to the 200 block of East La Porte Avenue after a man told dispatchers he needed police to help find his dogs and if officers did not help, “he would find people to do the police’s job for them.”
The suspect then hung up the phone. Dispatchers tried to call him back, but were unable to reach him.
While officers were on their way to the scene, dispatch received other calls from residents saying a man holding a bag sprayed an unknown substance around the street and blocked the street with a white SUV. The suspect was also reportedly lighting items on fire in the middle of the street, according to investigators.
Authorities said when officers arrived, they saw the suspect go back inside a house. The suspect then fired shots at the officers from inside the house, forcing officers to take cover.
Officers from surrounding jurisdictions, as well as a SWAT team, were then called to the scene to help.
Police said the suspect is in custody and some police personnel were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The public is asked to avoid the area as it is still classified as an active crime scene.
Officials said Addison Trail High School was placed in a “secure” environment “as a precaution in response. Students and staff are safe. This means outside doors are locked. They ask that you please avoid coming to the school at this time.”
