ADDISON, Ill. (WGN) – A man has been charged with attempted murder after shooting at officers from inside his Addison home Thursday morning, hitting one officer in the back of his vest.

The Addison Police Department announced Saturday morning that 45-year-old Salvador Lozano has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at an officer, one count of aggravated battery to a peace officer and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Lozano appeared in court Saturday morning and was denied pre-trial release.

Police said just before 11 a.m. Thursday, officers were sent to the 200 block of East La Porte Avenue after a man, now identified as Lozano, told dispatchers he needed police to help find his dogs and if officers did not help, “he would find people to do the police’s job for them.” He then hung up the phone. Dispatchers tried to call him back, but were unable to reach him.

While officers were on their way to the scene, dispatch received other calls from residents saying a man holding a bag sprayed an unknown substance around the street and blocked the street with a white SUV. He was also reportedly lighting items on fire in the middle of the street, according to investigators.

Authorities said when officers arrived, they saw Lozano go back inside a house. He then fired shots at the officers from inside the house, forcing officers to take cover.

Officers from surrounding jurisdictions, as well as a SWAT team, were then called to the scene to help.

SkyCam 9 flew over the scene and saw a group of officers kneeling behind vehicles staged across the street with guns drawn. Shattered glass was also seen on the home’s front stoop as well as a bullet hole through the pane of window glass on the front door.

Police said one officer was shot in the vest. He and multiple other officers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Lozano eventually surrendered and was taken into custody at around 3:15 p.m., according to investigators.

The incident caused Addison School District 4 to put all nine of its buildings on what they call “secure” status, keeping all students and staff indoors.

Lozano’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 24.
